Barrie Gellis--Poem on the origin of the New York Boys -- "Clearview"
I was one of the original "New York Boys" and in my first class, Seth referred to me as "our poet." I've written more than 4,000 poems, 80 published in magazines, and 100 appear in the book "Outside Is A Secret Key." All of the New York Boys came from three basic neighborhoods of Northeast Queens--Flushing, Bayside and Whitestone. The "heart" of these neighborhoods and of the major hangouts (the bay, PS 209, and Jerry's Candy Store)--was a pretty large complex of red-bricked, two-floor garden apartments--called Clearview--and on various parts of Utopia Parkway--were our three hangouts. A fitting name. Attached is a poem about the experiences of our teen years which led up to our discovering Seth and coming up to Seth class.
